At The Cutting Ed, we use the Dick, Carey, and Carey method of Instructional Design to help clients create both onground and online courses. Components of this model include:
Instructional Goal
- Development of the instructional goal: What problem do you want instruction to solve? What will the learners be able to do after receiving instruction?
- Needs Analysis
Instructional Analysis
- Determine the skills necessary to reach the Instructional Goal
- Task Analysis: List of steps and skills needed in each step of the process
Entry Behaviors and Learner Characteristics
- What skills will the students have when the begin instruction?
- Learner Analysis: What are the important learner characteristics helpful when designing a course?
Performance Objectives
- Creation of specific, measurable/observable objectives
Criterion-Referenced Test Items
- Prerequisites for learning the new skills
- Assessment Instrument
Instructional Strategy
- Creation of activities used to achieve terminal objectives
Instructional Materials
- Instructional materials needed to perform activities
Formative Evaluation
- Strategies for improving instruction
- Scalability of instruction
Revise Instruction
- Revision of instruction based on formative evaluation
